The Benefits and Joy of Pilates for Seniors

Do you think Pilates is only for young people? Think again! If you’re a senior, your Pilates session will soon become one of your favorite weekly activities!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or head trauma, and about 36 million falls are reported annually among older adults, resulting in more than 32,000 deaths. 

As seniors, finding an exercise method that trains whole body movement, balance, and joint mobility is important to avoid falls, maintain strength, and to live with comfort. Pilates for seniors does all of this and more. 

Get inspired by Joseph Pilates, the founder of the method, who practiced it until his death at 83. You’re never too old to learn something new! Let’s look at why Pilates is a safe and effective exercise for seniors. 

Improves core strength

Many Pilates movements focus on core strength. Your core (transverse abdominis, multifidi, pelvic floor, and diaphragm) is essential for moving well throughout your everyday life, whether pushing a shopping cart or walking or any number of other activities. With a stronger core, you will be more stable, improve your balance, lower your fall risk, and decrease low back pain. 

Improves mobility

Another benefit of Pilates for seniors is it improves spine articulation and joint mobility. Find comfort and ease in your body by reducing rigidity/stiffness and using the full range of motion available in your joints (spine, hips, shoulders, etc.). Practice Pilates to improve functional activities like going up and down stairs, moving from sitting to standing, and reaching overhead. Motion is lotion!

As we age, our immune systems are less effective at keeping us safe from illness and disease. With Pilates, you can give your immune system a boost  and support your overall health and wellbeing.
